    The Legal Aid Society’s Criminal Defense Practice has an opening for a Supervising Attorney in its Brooklyn office. The Supervising Attorney has front-line responsibility for the representation of clients in Criminal and Supreme Court. They directly supervise staff attorneys, investigators, and paralegals in the Complexes and offer tactical and legal advice on cases, observe hearings and trials, train new lawyers and law students, second-chair hearings and trials of junior attorneys, and periodically evaluate the work of staff.     The Parole Revocation Defense Unit has an immediate opening for two full time attorneys. A PRDU Staff Attorney represents clients accused of violating their conditions of release at administrative parole revocation hearings held at the Rikers Island Judicial Center, federal detention facilities, and hospital prison wards throughout New York City. The staff attorneys also appear on behalf of clients at related habeas corpus proceedings, administrative appeals, and other post-conviction proceedings. The practice is fast-paced and litigation-intensive. PRDU maintains offices at 199 Water Street, but attorneys spend significant amounts of time at the Rikers Island Judicial Center meeting clients and handling cases.

    Major Duties and Responsibilities

    The Disability Justice Director will provide strategic leadership for the DJ Program, fostering innovation and collaboration, developing and managing a robust docket of individual and systemic cases and advocacy campaigns, and broadening and deepening our community partnerships. The Disability Justice program currently includes a senior supervising counsel, 4 attorneys, and 5 legal advocates. Reporting to the Legal Director, the DJ Director is responsible for the day-to-day management, professional development, and evaluation of the legal, administrative and advocacy staff in the DJ program. In addition, the DJ Director will maintain an active advocacy docket.

    Key responsibilities include:

    Building and maintaining community partnerships and finding creative, multi-pronged solutions to address discrimination experienced by New Yorkers with disabilities;
    Working with program staff to build effective cases and campaigns;
    Maintaining a culture of bold and collaborative advocacy amongst program staff;
    Building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders including client communities, advocacy and community groups, pro bono partners, government agencies, elected and other public officials, the media, and the nonprofit legal community; and
    Supporting fundraising efforts for the program.



    A minimum of seven years of relevant experience in litigation, policy and/or administrative advocacy. Exceptional candidates with less experience will be considered.
    Management, supervisory, and/or leadership experience in a nonprofit legal program, or equivalent experience demonstrating outstanding skills in those areas.
    A demonstrated commitment to and/or experience in disability rights advocacy.
    Experience on campaigns that use multiple advocacy tools.
    Experience in federal and complex civil litigation strongly desired.
    Experience working productively with the private bar a plus.
    Experience working with coalitions of community members and community-based organizations.


    Must either be licensed to practice law in the State of New York or be eligible for admission to the New York bar at the time of hiring (must be admitted within one year of hire).
    Must be an attorney in good standing.

    Responsibilities: The Legal Assistant will be responsible for providing legal and administrative support to attorneys who work on an array of priorities within Lambda Legal’s mission.     The Columbia Law School Human Rights Institute invites applications for 2 positions of Director and Legal Fellow for the Project on Counterterrorism, Armed Conflict, and Human Rights, who will be hired at the level of Research Scholar and Associate Research Scholar at Columbia Law School.

    The Director and Legal Fellow will lead an innovative legal research and advocacy program to advance respect for international human rights law and humanitarian law in counterterrorism and armed conflict operations, particularly those undertaken by the United States and its allies.

    Together with the Human Rights Institute’s Faculty Co-Directors, the Director and Legal Fellow will be responsible for collaborating in developing the Project’s programmatic work and strategic agenda, and providing vision, research, writing, and public engagement for the projects. They will provide legal expertise on questions of international law, including international humanitarian and human rights law, and produce reports, white papers, blog posts and other publications, and solicit relevant research from outside experts. They will organize and actively participate in expert meetings of government and non-government representatives from the U.S. and abroad to explore key legal issues and best practices, and organize legal trainings for journalists, judges, or other groups, often in conjunction with other civil society organizations such as the ICRC. They will design and implement U.S. and international advocacy strategies to promote human rights. The work includes pursuing cutting edge factual, policy, and legal research and engaging with U.S. and foreign governments and civil society advocates on a variety of issues, including: promoting rights-protecting legal and policy standards for the use of armed drones; government investigations of civilian harm; compensation to victims in armed conflict; strengthening legal protections in non-international armed conflict; states’ “support” activities (military training, weapons provision, intelligence) to non state armed actors and other states; training journalists and judges in international law; and related issues.

    The Director and Legal Fellow will report to the Human Rights Institute’s Faculty Co-Directors, but they will have significant independence in developing the work plans for the projects. They will be responsible for managing teams of research assistants, and may have the opportunity to teach in the Human Rights Clinic and supervise Human Rights Clinic students. The positions will also generally contribute to the work of the Human Rights Institute at Columbia Law School, including through event planning and grant writing.

    Job Requirements – Applicants should have:
    A J.D. or foreign equivalent law degree;
    Demonstrated commitment to advancing human rights;
    For the Research Scholar, 8 or more years of experience is preferred. For the Associate Research Scholar, 3 or more years of experience is preferred. At either level, the researcher must have experience in law and practice of international humanitarian law and/or human rights;

    Housing Court Answers seeks a Spanish speaking, part time assistant for its Rental Arrears Hotline. HCA, an independent nonprofit, provides information to unrepresented people in Housing Court from information tables in all five boroughs and a hotline.

    The Hotline and Housing Assistant’s responsibilities include providing information about Housing Court and court procedures, referrals for legal assistance, rental arrears help, and social services or organizing. Ability to speak and write English and Spanish is necessary. The salary is currently $24,342 with benefits including single health coverage, subject to ongoing collective bargaining process. The position is 23 hours per week including three full days from 9-5. The hotline is run from our main office in lower Manhattan. The assistant will also work in the courts as needed.

    The Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) will design and launch a targeted advertising and public education campaign to increase Medicaid enrollment among recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and potential DACA applicants. This campaign would be the first large-scale effort anywhere in the United States to focus on DACA recipients' eligibility for Medicaid and other benefits.

    RESPONSIBILITES: The Campaign Coordinator will work alongside governmental and non-governmental partners of MOIA, other City agencies, and not-for-profit partners to design and implement the DACA advertising and public education campaign. This position is a temporary position, for a twenty-week period only. Major responsibilities of the Campaign Coordinator include, but are not limited to:

    Lead design of campaign's targeted advertising and public education components;
    Incorporate quantitative and qualitative research into the campaign design process;
    Conduct and/or contract for focus groups;
    Lead messaging development;
    Lead development of design;
    Work with governmental partners to purchase graphic design services, advertisement placements, and public-education materials;
    Develop an effective referral system for health insurance enrollment assistance;
    Design campaign with an awareness of the need to track metrics;
