    Housing Court Answers seeks a Spanish speaking, part time assistant for its Rental Arrears Hotline. HCA, an independent nonprofit, provides information to unrepresented people in Housing Court from information tables in all five boroughs and a hotline.

    The Hotline and Housing Assistant’s responsibilities include providing information about Housing Court and court procedures, referrals for legal assistance, rental arrears help, and social services or organizing. Ability to speak and write English and Spanish is necessary. The salary is currently $24,342 with benefits including single health coverage, subject to ongoing collective bargaining process. The position is 23 hours per week including three full days from 9-5. The hotline is run from our main office in lower Manhattan. The assistant will also work in the courts as needed.

    Responsibilities
    Answer calls on our busy hotline
    Provide rent arrears and eviction prevention referrals

    Answer questions about Housing Court, housing laws, and tenants rights and responsibilities
    Explain housing court procedures for tenants and landlords

    Assist on advocacy campaigns aimed at improving the lives of hotline callers and people in Housing Court without attorneys
    Assist on lobbying campaigns

    Description

    The Mayor's Office of Immigrant Affairs (MOIA) will design and launch a targeted advertising and public education campaign to increase Medicaid enrollment among recipients of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and potential DACA applicants. This campaign would be the first large-scale effort anywhere in the United States to focus on DACA recipients' eligibility for Medicaid and other benefits.

    RESPONSIBILITES: The Campaign Coordinator will work alongside governmental and non-governmental partners of MOIA, other City agencies, and not-for-profit partners to design and implement the DACA advertising and public education campaign. This position is a temporary position, for a twenty-week period only. Major responsibilities of the Campaign Coordinator include, but are not limited to:

    Lead design of campaign's targeted advertising and public education components;
    Incorporate quantitative and qualitative research into the campaign design process;
    Conduct and/or contract for focus groups;
    Lead messaging development;
    Lead development of design;
    Work with governmental partners to purchase graphic design services, advertisement placements, and public-education materials;
    Develop an effective referral system for health insurance enrollment assistance;
    Design campaign with an awareness of the need to track metrics;
    Document research, recommendations, and decisions throughout the campaign; and
    Produce final report on the campaign.

    SKILLS AND QUALIFICIATIONS:

    A graduate degree or bachelor's degree from an accredited institution;
    At least one year of professional experience in a relevant field;
    Strong project management skills with exceptional attention to detail;
    Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment required;
    Strategic and flexible;
    Excellent organizational skills;

    Policy Coordinator Position

    The Coordinator will also work to advance the organization’s policy positions in the broader community by educating organizations, policy makers and other stakeholders about Empire Justice Center’s overall mission as an organization.     The Position:

    Georgetown University's Center for Applied Legal Studies (CALS) announces that it is now accepting applications for its annual fellowship program in clinical legal education. CALS will offer one lawyer a two‑year teaching fellowship (July 2016‑June 2018), providing a unique opportunity to learn how to teach law in a clinical setting.

    At CALS, our two fellows and faculty members work as colleagues, sharing responsibilities for designing and teaching classes, supervising law students in their representation of clients, selecting and grading students, administering the clinic, and all other matters. In addition, the fellow will undertake independent legal scholarship, conducting the research and writing to produce a law review article of publishable quality.

    This fellowship is particularly suitable for lawyers with some degree of practice experience who now want to embark upon careers in law teaching. Most of our previous fellows are now teaching law or have done so for substantial portions of their careers.

    Since 1995, CALS has specialized in immigration law, specifically in asylum practice, and our docket focuses on presenting asylum claims in immigration court. Applicants with experience in U.S. immigration law will therefore be given preference. The fellow must be a member of a bar at the start of the fellowship period.

    The fellow will receive full tuition and fees in the LL.M. program at Georgetown University, and a stipend of at least $53,500 in each of the two years. On successful completion of the requirements, the Fellow will be granted the degree of Master of Laws (Advocacy) with distinction.

    The Pace Environmental Litigation Clinic is an innovative program that combines the training of environmental law students with vigorous legal representation for public interest environmental causes. The Clinic’s primary client is the Hudson Riverkeeper. In operation for nearly thirty years, the Pace Environmental Litigation Clinic has pioneered clinical environmental legal education with its unique partnership between a law school clinic and grass roots advocacy organization. Students gain in-depth professional training in environmental law while having a measurable impact on the management of one of the premiere natural resources on the East Coast: the Hudson River-Long Island Sound estuarine system. The Clinic has won a series of precedent-setting cases, prosecuting governments and companies, expanding citizen access to the shoreline, suing sewage treatment plants and landfills to comply with a variety of environmental statutes. Clinic students gain first-hand experience in advocacy litigation, including trying cases, arguing motions, negotiating, participating in administrative proceedings on environmental regulations, evaluating scientific data from field studies or scientific analyses, interaction with other community-based citizens organizations, and use of publicity and news media.

    Unlike clinical programs that limit students to research roles or drafting policy papers, the Pace Environmental Litigation Clinic emphasizes direct student responsibility for client representation. Under a practice order issued by the Appellate Division, Second Department, Pace Students are authorized to practice law under the supervision of clinical faculty. Clinic students draft pleadings, argue motions in federal and state courts, conduct trials before courts and agencies, advocate environmental causes to public agencies. Clinic students are not mere legal assistants to the Clinic supervising attorneys: the students are the attorneys.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The Supervising Attorney will work with the Clinic Co-Directors on cases representing individuals, community groups and non-profit environmental and conservation organizations. In this role, the Supervising Attorney will also work closely with and supervise Student Legal Interns. The Supervising Attorney is expected to be lead counsel and take primary professional responsibility for the Clinic’s case docket.

    This position will have primary responsibility for the full range of tasks associated with litigating cases in a small law firm setting before state and federal courts and state administrative agencies, at both the trial and appellate levels. Cases litigated by the Clinic may range from challenges to administrative agency decisions where judicial review is on the administrative record to full-scale evidentiary trials. The Clinic caseload emphasizes federal environmental citizen enforcement suits.

    The Supervising Attorney will have primary responsibility for mentoring and supervising Legal Interns and will co-teach the Clinic seminar and practicum along with the Clinic Co-Directors. The Supervising Attorney will also assist the Clinic Co-Directors in the day-to-day administration of clinic operations.

    EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

    Superb analytical, research, writing and speaking skills.

    At least five years of environmental litigation experience.
