Asian Bar Association of New York (SABNY),
the National Asia Pacific Bar Association
(NAPBA), the Puerto Rican Bar Association
(PRBA), the Hispanic National Bar Association
(HNBA), and the Hispanic Alliance
for Career Development (HACE), held a
networking event. This event was sponsored
by Merrill Lynch.

25 – The Honorable William C. Thompson,
Jr. Comptroller of the City of New York
held his annual celebration of Latino
Heritage and Culture. Five members of
the Latino community were honored by Comptroller
Thompson. Approximately 200 guests attended
this event. DBA is proud to be a co-sponsor
of this event.

20 - Community Legal Clinic.

17 – DBA held a general membership
meeting and election. Five members were
elected to join DBA’s 2008 Board
of Directors. They will begin their terms
January 2008.
October 4 –November 14--- DBA in
collaboration with several other New York
area bar associations and the ABA’s
Real Property Probate & Trust Law
Section offered a six session course for
a total of 12 CLE credits. This course
was free of charge for DBA dues paid members.
The topic was Elder Law and Article 81
Guardianship. The course was designed
to provide attendees with a much greater
understanding of Elder Law and what is
needed to know to qualify as a Guardian
for allegedly incapacitated persons pursuant
to Article 81of New York’s Mental
Hygiene Law.

attorneys who answer basic legal questions
for the community.

9 - The Asian American Bar Association
of New York, Black Bar Association of
Bronx County, Dominican Bar Association
and Puerto Rican Bar Association participated
in the NYC Susan G. Komen Race for the
cure. Members of the above-referenced
bar associations comprised the “Lawyers
for a Cure” team. Supporters and
members of each respective bar association
walked together to bring greater awareness
to the issues of early screening and detection
of breast cancer in women of color. Each
participating bar association gave a $250
donation to the team and collectively
the “Lawyers for a Cure” team
raised over $3,600.

9 - Mix and Mingle – The power of
Latino Philanthropy. This event is sponsored
by the Hispanic Federation and co-hosted
by the Hispanic employee networks of American
Express, Banco Popular, Citbank, Deloitte,
Dominican Bar Association, Dominicans
On Wall St, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers,
Merril Lynch, Moody's and Morgan Stanley.
This event brought together memmbers of
the Latino professional community to meet
each other, share best practices and identify
ways to collaborate in order to help the
Latino community.

4 – DBA was pleased to co-sponsor
PRLDEF’s 9th Annual How to Succeed
in Law School workshop in conjunction
with the Puerto Rican Bar Association,
Hispanic National Bar Association- NY
Region and the Latino Lawyers Association
of Queens County. At this event members
come together to welcome the incoming
class of minority law students.
The law students received helpful information
about law school. After the panel discussion,
a reception was held where the students
learned about the bar associations, received
scholarship information and asked members
questions about school and career. The
event was hosted by the law firm of Mayer
Brown Rowe and Maw.

27 - Merengue Night at Shea Stadium. Approximately
75 people attended the Mets v. Nationals
game at Shea Stadium. Even though the
Mets lost, the Merengue concert made up
for the game. Not only did we have great
seats, each guest also received a gift.

28 - Lunch with DBA. At this event, DBA
members and friends came together to socialize
and learn and discuss upcoming DBA events
and activities. The event was held in
Supreme Court, NY County. Thanks to Judge
Tingling for providing his courtroom for
this event and former DBA President Manny
Tavarez for his assistance with planning
this event.

27 - Lunch with DBA. At this event, Bronx
DBA members and friends came together
to socialize and learn and discuss upcoming
DBA events and activities. A delicious
lunch consisting of Spanish food was provided
by DBA. The event was held in Bronx County
Supreme Court. Thanks to Hon. Barry Salman
for permitting us the use of a courtroom
for this event.

8 – DBA was proud to participate
in the NYC Court Cultural Diversity program
which sought to bring us together and
celebrate our cultural differences. This
event was attended by several hundred
guests at NY County’s Supreme Court.

7 - Mendez v. Westminster event. In 1946,
the Mendez and other families challenged
California's segregated public school
system, which provided separate, inferior
schools for Latino students. The US District
Court decision held that the segregated
school system was unconstitutional, and
its decision was affirmed in 1947 by the
9th Circuit Court of Appeals, seven years
before the US Supreme Court decision in
Brown v. Board of Education. At this event,
attendees viewed the Emmy award winning
documentary, Mendez v. Westminster: For
the Children, with remarks by Sandra Robbie,
its creator. Sylvia Mendez,
a daughter of the plaintiffs, was present
and made remarks about the documentary
and upcoming release of the USPS stamp
honoring her parents. This event was held
in conjunction with the HNBA- NY Region,
the Latino Lawyers Association of Queens
County, the Puerto Rican Bar Association
and the West Harlem Environmental Action

29 - Career Day at George Washington High
School. Members of the Dominican
Bar Association, Dominicans on Wall Street
and the Dominican-American Professional
Alliance went back to school to meet with
high school students. The volunteers discussed
their career paths and answered student’s
questions. Student feedback was very positive.

Professionals Alliance, Latino Lawyers

Association attended a free networking
social held at Nuves Lounge in Queens.
At this event, members of all three organizations
networked and socialized amongst each
other. The guests enjoyed dinner and had
a great time.

Parcel Service (UPS) was the Platinum

200 people were in attendance to honor

This event was in partnership with the
Minority Corporate Counsel Association
(MCCA), the Hispanic National Bar Association
(HNBA), the Puerto Rican Bar Association
(PRBA), the Dominican Bar Association
(DBA) and the Metropolitan Black Bar Association
(MBBA).

18 – In conjunction with Lisa Purzak,
President of Touro Law Center’ LALSA,
DBA co-sponsored the 2007 Diversity Conference.
The event was hosted by the firm of Ruskin
Moscou Faltischek, P.C. in Nassau County.
The purpose of this event was to bring
together minority high school, college
and law students for a day of information,
training and mentoring. Scheduled events
included seminars, CLE’s and a drawing
for a free LSAT prep course, sponsored
by DBA. Keynote Speaker Hon. Dora Irizarry,
U.S. District Court, Eastern District;
David Mejia, Nassau County Legislator;
Mark Bonilla, Hempstead Town Clerk and
Hon. Lucindo Suarez, Supreme Court, Bronx
County were present and addressed the
students.

3 – DBA held it’s first fundraiser
of the year by selling tickets to the
Off Broadway play-- IN THE HEIGHTS. A
new Latino hip hop musical about two days
in the life of Washington Heights, a vibrant
and tight-knit neighborhood at the top
of Manhattan. From the vantage point of
Usnavi's corner bodega, we experience
the joys, heartbreaks and bonds of a Latino
community struggling to redefine home.
