[Requirements
To Take The New York State Bar] by
Ebenezer A. Smith
Section 520.5(b) of the Rules of the
Court of the Appeals requires that
a lawyer admitted in a foreign jurisdiction,
who has not been trained in the common-law
legal system, complete 20 credits
at an approved law school in the U.S.,
in order to be eligible to take the
New York State bar examination.

The New York State Bar candidate
should take the following steps:
(1) Translate foreign school transcript
and/or credentials into English. The
translation can be done by you and
it does not need to be certified or
notarized;
(2) Send translated transcript to
the State Board of Law Examiners,
7 Executive Centre Drive, Albany,
NY 12203-5148, tel: (518)452-8700;
(3) Send translated transcript to
be evaluated by the World Education
Services,
P.O. Box 745, Old Chelsea Station,
New York, NY 10113-0745, (212) 966-6311;
(4) Take "Test of English as
Foreign Language" (Toefl); request
application for Toefl test at
P.O. Box 6151, Princeton, NJ 08541-6151,
tel. (609) 771-7760.
Each school sets its own passing marks
for test, ranging from 550 to 700.
