Notice of Job Opening Director of Litigation - The Director of Ligation will work closely with Legal Services NYC – Bronx’s new Project Director to develop and implement a vision for the future of anti-poverty work in the Bronx. Legal Services NYC - Bronx is the largest provider of free civil legal services in the borough, and the largest Legal Services office in New York City. Legal Services NYC Bronx's mission is to advance society's promise to the most vulnerable members that they are entitled to equal access to our legal system. Our services bring subsistence income to those living in poverty, prevent homelessness, preserve families, enforce the right of all children to a decent public education, ensure access to medical care, protect the elderly from fraud and neglect, and provide the support necessary to permit the victims of domestic violence to escape their abusers. In partnership with all staff, the Director of Litigation’s first task will be to develop a litigation plan and goals that spans all practice areas and incorporates the many tools that are available to us to make positive change, including: targeted multi-plaintiff affirmative litigation, novel defenses and counter-claims in on-going defensive litigation, selected appeals and amicus briefs, and creating active partnerships with community-based organizations serving the interests of the poor in the Bronx.

Responsibilities: The Director of Litigation’s responsibilities will include: Developing a litigation plan within each practice areaand across practice areas, Identifying trends in our high volume of individual cases that could be addressed by strategic action, Creating and sustaining teams to engage in affirmative litigation and other forms of advocacy, Supporting the work of attorneys engaged in complex litigation in Supreme and Federal Court, Assisting in the preparation of appellate papers, Identifying and pursuing amicus opportunities that are consistent with internal litigation goals, Creating and pursuing opportunities for collaboration with other not-for-profit legal providers and for-profit law offices, Assuming other duties as may be delegated by the Project Director.

Requirements: The candidate should have at least five years litigation experience, preferably some in a public-interest law office that provides direct services to individual clients. A broad acquaintance with the areas of law practiced by public interest attorneys in the civil arena is required. The candidate should be admitted to practice in NY state court and federal court, and should have strong oral and writing skills. The ideal candidate would have a demonstrated history of versatility, and creative and innovative work. The salary for the position is competitive and commensurate with experience. SENIOR PROGRAM ASSOCIATE - Substance Use and Mental Health Program

Vera’s Substance Use and Mental Health Program (SUMH) aims to reduce justice system contact for people with substance use and mental health issues. SUMH is launching the Behavioral Health and Justice Information Sharing Project (BHAJIS), a new initiative to develop and disseminate resources for health and justice policy makers and practitioners seeking to share information on the substance use and mental health needs of their clients. By developing policy briefs, technical guidelines, working papers and webinars, and hosting these materials on a project website, BHAJIS will support jurisdictions in sharing data in safe, legal and ethical ways to increase access to treatment services and improve individual and community outcomes.

Vera seeks an individual to manage this project who has a detailed understanding of the challenges and opportunities of information sharing, an interest in developing training materials and policy briefs, and is comfortable working closely with policymakers and practitioners. The ideal candidate may be someone with extensive experience: working for information sharing project in a government or non-profit capacity; working in a legal or policy environment negotiating access to confidential health and/or justice information; or conducting research with confidential health and/or justice related data sets. While this is a health and justice project, this person could have worked in a variety of related fields, such as hospital administration, law enforcement, education, or child welfare. This position reports directly to the SUMH program director.

 

 

Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the Program Director, the Senior Program Associate will:

 

 

· Write policy briefs, training materials, and case studies; · Create and conduct webinars and online trainings;· Manage relationships with project advisors, government partners, and project funders;· Convene and facilitate meetings and focus group discussions;· Represent SUMH and BHAJIS in public speaking engagements and professional meetings and conferences;

· Work with a website consultant to design and implement the project website; Work closely with SUMH research staff to disseminate research findings to policy and practitioner audiences;

Work closely with the Program Director on program development and grant writing; and

Manage daily administration and project tasks, including supervision of project staff.

 Qualifications

Candidates must possess the following: Graduate degree (JD, PHD,or Master’s) with relevant work experience; Excellent writing and communication skills; Experience in public policy, psychology, law, government, public health or related social science disciplines (with experience working on issues related to criminal justice, substance use and/or mental health preferred); Knowledge of or experience with information sharing initiatives; for example DOJ’s Global Justice Information Sharing Initiative, HHS-Connect, or other similar government or non-profit projects; Project management experience; Interest in working in a collaborative environment; Ability and confidence to facilitate meetings of senior policymakers, researchers and practitioners; Willingness to travel outside of New York City; and An understanding of applied research methods.Compensation Commensurate with experience, excellent benefits.

Position: The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is seeking an attorney to work in the Brennan Center’s Democracy Program. The Program seeks to bring the ideal of representative self-government closer to reality, by eliminating barriers to full and equal political participation and by striving to ensure that public policy and institutions represent and reflect the diverse voices and interests that make for a rich and energetic democracy. Brennan Center attorneys achieve these goals through a rich combination of direct advocacy, public education, model legislation, litigation, and academic research and writing.

This position may focus on voting rights and election reform (including practices likely to suppress the vote and have a disproportionate impact on communities of color); money in politics, including managing current constitutional litigation defending state and federal campaign finance reforms; integrity of the judicial system; and/or redistricting. The substantive focus will be narrowed down during the course of the selection process.

Responsibilities may include:

· Assisting in impact litigation that advances the goals of the Democracy Program in state and federal trial and appellate courts, including work on case development, discovery, and motions and briefs.

· Conducting legal and academic research and writing reports that shed light on inequities in our systems of Democracy.

· Participating in Brennan Center legislative advocacy and policy work.

· Advancing Brennan Center goals through public speaking engagements, media appearances, blog posts, and conferences.

· Supervising student interns, legal fellows, and research associates and assisting in recruiting and hiring.

 

Qualifications

 

: The ideal candidate will have a J.D.; at least one year of legal experience (including clerkships, if any) in the private sector, government, academia, or policy advocacy; a strong entrepreneurial spirit; and passion for the work of the Center. Excellent writing skills (for a variety of audiences, including legal, legislative, journalistic, and public), as well as excellent analytic, strategic, and research skills; creativity, versatility, and flexibility; organizational skills; and the ability to deal with diverse clients and allies and to coordinate work effectively with other entities will be required. Demonstrated commitment to the public interest field a real plus.
